Keep Construction Open
and 7 Other Top Wins for the Construction Industry in 2020
AGC had a great year focusing on Keeping Construction Open and advocating for members in these trying times:
1. Keep Construction Open - AGC worked with 3 other associations to communicate with the Governor’s Office and state & local health departments to Keep Construction Open in 2020. Members quickly deployed into task forces to deliver needed information to the industry:
• Keep Construction Open – Joint task force with CCA, HBA & MCA
• Jobsite Protocol and Jobsite Best Practices
• AHJ & CA Inspection working with local entities, architects and engineers
• Business Continuation & Cask Flow by our Associate Council
2. Advocacy - AGC in partnership with C3 was able to keep stop job killing HB20-1420 from advancing in the legislature in 2020. HB20-1420 would have cancelled a dozen tax credit programs and would have amounted to a huge tax increase for business.
3. Carbon Tax - AGC worked with CREA to keep the Carbon Tax off the Denver Ballot (avoiding a steep tax on commercial buildings). Denver 2A was the substitute measure that increased Denver sales tax by 0.025% for greenhouse gas emission programs.
4. Diversity - AGC launched the Culture of Care initiative and had the most construction companies sign on out of any AGC chapter in the Country. www.buildculture.org
5. Homeless Challenges – AGC partnered with Downtown Denver Partnership and Visit Denver to form the Business Homeless Coalition to address this major challenge to commercial development. The result was a successful Denver 2B campaign and $40M annually for affordable housing, increased shelter space and mental illness services.
6. Membership & Networking - AGC conducted GC Showcase events virtually to keep general contractors, specialty contractors and suppliers connected during COVID-19.
7. Southern Colorado - AGC opened a district office in Colorado Springs to deliver services and have a place for members to gather in this important area of the state.
8. Workforce Development – The Construction Education Foundation expanded to 20 high school locations serving 1,200 students from 100+ high schools for the Careers in Construction high school construction trades program, and continued the adult pre-apprenticeship program Construction Careers Now virtually across the state.
