Local High Schools Partnering with Careers in Construction Colorado to Build On-Site Homes Beginning Spring 2019
Careers in Construction, a workforce- development program powered by Colorado Springs Housing & Building Association (CSHBA) and Associated General Contractors-Colorado (AGC-C), has now evolved into its own 501(c)
(3) nonprofit organization- Careers in Construction Colorado (CICC) and is quite literally building momentum.
CICC recently launched its Home Build Program, where participating CICC high school students will build modular homes on-site school district property with CTE instructor supervision and assistance from trade professionals. Through this program, students will be able to apply their skills in carpentry, electrical and plumbing, while gaining industry- level experience.
“The formation of our new nonprofit solidifies our partnership with the Associated General Contractors to allow us to expand our program and offer Careers in Construction Colorado classes throughout the state. Through the 501(c)(3), we will be able to manage the operational aspects of the Home Build Program and roll
the profits from the sale of each home back into CICC, ensuring the program’s viability and sustainability,” said Renee Zentz, CSHBA CEO.
The first group of participating schools’ students spent last semester building scaled models of the actual home they will begin constructing this spring. Those schools include Power Technical Early College in District 49, and Widefield High School and Mesa Ridge High School in District 3, with additional schools starting construction in Fall of 2019.
“Many will remember that Widefield had a tradition of partnering with a local developer to allow students to
build a home,” said Scott Campbell, Widefield District 3 Superintendent. “Unfortunately, that program had to be eliminated with the impact
of the 2008 recession. Upon partnering with the CICC program, we resurrected our building trades program and are thrilled to be
one of the initial school districts
to participate in the Home Build Program. The impact of this program is profound in our district and will result in an increase in skilled tradesman and continue the tradition of supporting a strong construction program in
our community.”
Since its inception, CICC has been supported through industry and educational partnerships. The Home Build Program has acquired national level industry partners to supply building materials, including Clayton Homes, Norbord, Shaw Floors, GAF Materials Corporation, Boise Cascade and Kohler. CICC is also identifying local trades who will supervise and teach students through their respective phases on the home.
In addition to these partnerships, the program received additional support this month thanks to
the Pikes Peak Regional Building Commission. The three-person commission approved a one-time financial participation to help fund the expansion of the program. Pikes Peak Regional Building Department (PPRBD) will also be inspecting the builds like any other home, providing the students with even more education on how the building industry works.
