Cañon City’s 3 Rocks Engineering & Surveying Named a 2026 Colorado Companies to Watch Winner
Rural engineering firm founded in 2019 is one of about 50 companies honored statewide for growth, innovation, and community impact.
3 Rocks Engineering & Surveying has been named a winner of the 2026 Colorado Companies to Watch award, a statewide honor recognizing second-stage companies that create quality jobs, develop innovative products and services, and strengthen their communities. The Cañon City-based firm was one of 50 winners selected from more than 1,000 companies nominated across Colorado, and the honorees were celebrated June 19 at the program's 18th annual Gala Awards Dinner at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum in Denver, where more than 600 business leaders gathered. Governor Jared Polis proclaimed June 19, 2026, Colorado Companies to Watch Day in recognition of the winners.
Founded in 2019 by Alex and Andrea Ewers, 3 Rocks has grown from a one-person operation into a multi-disciplinary team of roughly 30 engineers, surveyors, and support staff, with offices in Cañon City, Colorado Springs, and Buena Vista. The firm provides civil engineering, structural engineering, and land surveying under one roof — a combination that is rare outside Colorado's major metro areas — and focuses on serving the rural communities of southeast Colorado, a region the firm believes has long been underserved by the engineering industry.
“Most firms with our capabilities aren't motivated to serve rural communities, but that's exactly who we are and who we're for,” said Alex Ewers, owner of 3 Rocks Engineering & Surveying. “We're a rural firm serving rural communities. This award belongs to our whole team and to the neighbors across southeast Colorado who have trusted us with their schools, homes, water, and infrastructure.”
The recognition also reflects the firm's commitment beyond its project work. Guided by a mission to “care for our neighbors,” 3 Rocks is heavily involved in the community through regularly hosting high school interns and giving back through their foundation. The firm's dedicated research and development efforts also produced the patented SteadyFlow Gate, an irrigation headgate designed to help farmers and ranchers manage water more reliably — an innovation rooted in the same agricultural communities the firm serves.
The award comes amid continued growth for the company, which recently earned a place on the City of Colorado Springs' on-call civil engineering services list and plans to continue expanding its services and presence across southeast Colorado in the years ahead.
