May Bonfils Stanton Theatre Renovation
Historic May Bonfils Stanton Theatre to Get Major Renovation
A major renovation is moving forward at the historic May Bonfils Stanton Theatre, located on the southwest end of Denver’s Loretto Heights campus. First opened in the 1960s, the midcentury theater is set to become a centerpiece of southwest Denver’s cultural scene through a $60 million project.
Architect of Record | Perkins Eastman Architects
Perkins Eastman Architects, a firm known for its work on theaters at college campuses, will lead the $9.3 million design and engineering effort over the next three years. The renovation will focus on ADA accessibility, improved acoustics, upgraded seating for 750 guests, and new lighting and sound systems. Plans also include a revamped control booth, updated building systems, and enhanced outdoor amenities overlooking the Rocky Mountains.
May Bonfils Theatre Project Part of 72-acre Loretto Heights Area Plan
This project is the first phase of a larger redevelopment effort under the 72-acre Loretto Heights Area Plan, led by Westside Investment Partners and Denver Arts & Venues. Supported by $30 million in RISE bond funding approved by voters in 2021, the effort aims to breathe new life into the site, which also includes a former library and other historic buildings. Future phases will add parking, additional library renovations, and further cultural spaces, pending new funding. City officials say this level of investment is unprecedented for the area, which has long lacked major civic and cultural facilities.
