The Hotel Denver in Glenwood Springs Unveils Newly Renovated Spaces and New Identity as the Hotel Maxwell Anderson
The historic property underwent a two phased renovation with enhancements to all Rooms and Public Spaces.
The Hotel Maxwell Anderson, formerly The Hotel Denver, is excited to unveil a new name and newly renovated spaces that maintains the iconic history of the hotel that has been in downtown Glenwood Springs since 1915. Terrapin Investments began a two-phase renovation of the hotel in early 2023 that has resulted in significant enhancements to the lobby, 73 guest rooms/suites, and public spaces including 17 newly added rooms, a completed lobby and redesigned public spaces. The name has also changed to ensure guests from near and far can easily find and book their stay at the Hotel Maxwell Anderson.
“The completion of this multi-phased renovation is a major milestone for the Town and we are excited to show off the history of the building alongside an updated new design that will delight any guest,” said Roger Smith, Dual General Manager of The Hotel Maxwell Anderson and The Hotel Glenwood Springs. ”As one of the original hotels in Glenwood Springs, this historic gem is an oasis for travelers looking for a boutique experience in the heart of town and they will be delighted by these changes.”
The new name “Maxwell Anderson” pays homage to its roots as the star of Glenwood Springs, situated just steps from the Colorado railroad which transported miners, travelers and settlers through Colorado’s mountains in the early 1900’s. While the name has familial ties to the owner, “Maxwell Anderson” will be the depiction of a fictional humble train conductor who rode the rails in these early days and represents that long and storied past of the iconic building and will come to life in various ways. The property has maintained many elements that harken back to the town’s railroad history, including the beloved antique pieces and the classic vintage charm the property is famous for– all while incorporating modern furnishings, improved technology and new amenities to enhance the guest experience.
“The delightful old-world hospitality of this downtown Glenwood Springs boutique hotel has endeared locals and visitors alike since 1915 and we did not change that,” said Tony Sherman, owner of Terrapin Investments. ”But Glenwood Springs continues to attract a new and broader demographic and our lodging options need to reflect their preferences. Moreover, the name has proven confusing for people who regularly mistake it for the nearby Hotel Colorado or aren’t sure if the property is in Denver instead of Glenwood Springs.”
The Hotel Maxwell Anderson is a fresh new chapter for the property and in Glenwood Spring’s rich history as a top mountain destination. Guests will still experience the same hospitality the very first guests did 100 years ago, blended with modern rooms and suites that have a century of stories to tell. Evolution Hospitality will be managing the property and is known for creating a distinct lifestyle for guests.
“Our mission is to create memorable and meaningful experiences for our guests at the new Hotel Maxwell Anderson,” said Stacey Rivera, Vice President of Evolution Hospitality. “This hotel offers unexpected touches that capture the hospitality of downtown Glenwood Springs. Our team is truly passionate about creating an authentic experience that is whimsical and differentiated.”
The renovation was managed by MKD Associates, who oversaw the renovation, and consisted of two phases over 18 months beginning with all guest rooms. The lobby was updated and opened up so there is direct access to the adjacent Glenwood Canyon Brew Pub and a new lobby design with plush new furnishings alongside modern design elements. The owner added a total of 15 new rooms and suites from previously underutilized meeting and retail space. The architect for the renovation was Rally Dupps.
Wild Muse Interiors, was the Denver based interior design team, and created a sophisticated color palette and luxurious textiles into the hotel, combining many of the beloved antiquities and historic details with a modern approach. The lobby now features a fireplace, offering guests a space to relax, reconnect and share narratives of their own.The Hotel will now function similarly to a full service hotel with the ability to order in-room food and beverage.
“This Hotel has so many stories to share, which have been cobbled together over the last century, so the design intent was clear to us from the beginning; to create a space in which storied history and modern luxury artfully combine,” said Christina Skopliak, lead designer and owner at Wild Muse Interiors. “We wanted to preserve its much-loved charm and appeal by carefully stitching together an aesthetic in which the old and new occupy the same space.”
